It is not clear when boot cut jeans and Danskos were no longer the cutting edge of fashion, but it turns out they are not. (I know, I was shocked too.) Being somewhat beholden to worldly trends, I went out to conform and got myself some cute skinny jeans and some great boots. Yesterday we were on our way to Target up in the Bronx, where all new fashion is test driven, and I was dressed to the hilt in my new skinny jeans and boots. Lucia was fussy and I was trying to figure out what she wanted when Cyra made it clear to me: "Mom, Lulu doesn't like your costume." Costume. Yes, that's right, a costume to camouflage my fading youth. Out of the mouth of babes...

I once curled my hair for a date. The guy laughed at me when I got there. That Cyra is (angry voice) ADORABLE.
haha! that is too funny. we really enjoyed having cyra in the primary room today for sunbeams. she is so cute!
and you are one of the only moms of two i know who can totally rock skinny jeans and look fabulous! i for one, am jealous of that. and i'm not even a mom yet...
All I can say to that is bummer...because I'm the same age and I do the same things, but my kids don't talk that well yet, so I know they're thinking the same exact thing.
HILARIOUS! & WoW there's a target in the Bronx? I haven't been "home" in years...
Cyra will be sporting her own costumes before too long. Although I think if you tell a teenager that you don't like her costume it could have really bad consequences.
Looking forward to seeing you in your costume. Preferably with a wide belt.
WHAT? I just bought those Danskos for Christmas that you recommended way back when. Shoot.
Cyra is hilarious. When/where did you get skinny jeans? Maybe you should have consulted me first. If I'm not around, at least bring Cyra- she seems to know a thing or two about fashion.
Ouch. I've been laughing about this all day. I guess this is why we have kids -- to put us in our place.
um, i think we need pictures. :) got to love kids.
I will laughing about this all day!
Girls always watch out for their moms. But I didn't know it started so young...
I heart danskos. I still don't wear boots. Don't own them. I am really into flats however! Those are in.... right? Or are they "costume" HAHA. That is hilarious.
Just a couple days ago Max pointed to my tummy and said "It's big". I said, "No, it's small" and he said "NO Mommy, It's BIG" even louder. Then we stopped talking and I stopped eating.
kids.
i love it! i bet you look great in your skinny jeans and boots "costume".
were really going to miss cyra in nursery...cant wait for lucia though.
That was priceless. Yes, I had a similar experience with the skinny jeans and boots...but the comment wasn't made by my kids it was by my husband..nice.
sidenote: I found that Amy Port's got a blog, but I can't leave a message. Does she have an email address or is she on facebook? thanks.
I'm dying. Please post a picture. So my new obsession is go international, the designer line from Target. I'm completely obsessed. Alexander McQueen's new collection is coming out in March. I need help. The only things I have to look forward to in this life are Target and the next New Yorker. Love,
Alia
I am still laughing about Cyra's comment 5 minutes later. I really can't picture you in anything but Dansko's and bootcut jeans so maybe I am on Cyra's side. Honestly, they are more comfortable, why suffer and cause Lucia distress???
When Mike and I were in CA back in April for his brother's wedding, we had a date night out. We ended up going to the Irvine Spectrum (it's an outdoor mall). I hadn't planned well (was wearing shorts) and so I was freezing. Instead of going home, we decided to go into Old Navy to get a pair of jeans for me. Mind you, my clothing style has not changed in 15 years. Old Navy isn't exactly the first store I would go to shop. "Trendy" isn't a word that describes me. However, the two things I did learn from that trip to Old Navy is that (1) Old Navy sells pretty comfortable jeans for $30 and by golly, that's a good deal & (2) There is such a thing as a "skinny" jean. The young (as in maybe 17 year-old) sales clerk was helping me navigate the store to find a pair that would suit me. The first pair she pulled off the shelf was a "skinny." I honestly wasn't sure what she meant. I think she didn't know what to do with me at that point and I think that I was really showing my age at that same moment. She in fact was wearing "skinny" jeans - and pirouetted slightly on her toe to show me. "Oh yes," I said. "I remember those. Jeans like the ones I used to wear in the 8th grade." Needless to say, I did eventually walk out with a pair of boot cuts --- and Danskos still work fine for me, thank you. So much for being trendy!
Okay, well at least you could actually pull off skinny jeans! Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for the rest of the world, I will not be donning a pair....ever.
I LOVE IT! I wish we could all go dance and eat out in our costumes. I am still looking for a good pair of skinnies, so maybe i could wear some leggings? :) Ah, I miss ya.
ha ha ha!! oh my word. that cyra - the fashion princess. but i'm sure you looked smokin' hot.
This is one of the most hysterical stories I've heard.
I love it! I am still laughing about it. Way to go, wearing the skinny jeans. Bummer about the Danskos. I just got some for Christmas.
I vote pictures!
Ohhhhh Cyra. I can totally see her telling you that with all the earnestness/exasperation she possesses. If she is going to be anything like Rachel, you'd just better get some thicker skin. Rachel said to me during Dan's sister Holly's visit: "Mom- you are the third chubbiest. Aunt Holly is first, then Grandma Fisk, then you." After I asked her to please include the uncles, I dropped another two places. Nice. I guess I'm calling off my search for Danskos @ Last Chance...
hilarious! i've recently had the run in the with "should i get skinny jeans?" fashion dilemna and as of yet i will remain out of style...
this is what ajay says to me.
and he throws almost the same tantrums. last weekend he told me he would go with me somewhere as long as I took off the "riding boots". i love your story. ajay found it somehow and i had to look it up. great to see your blog and pictures too! xox angie
This made me laugh out loud... hysterical.
